Question:
What was your dream job when you were young?

Valecia:
An accountant! I have always enjoyed working with numbers and being able to find and solve problems. The ability to help others has always inspired me as well.
Question:
How did you end up as a portfolio manager at The Fulcrum Group?

Valecia:
I started as a Premium Finance Administrator with Fulcrum, which gave me the opportunity to learn all about Premium Financing and understand it not only from a sales perspective but also from an operational one. I loved the constant change of insurance and Premium Financing and so I began–and have just completed–my Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Short Term insurance to give a theoretical foundation to my practical knowledge. When my mentor, Kerry Christian, immigrated I was offered the opportunity to become the Portfolio Manager for KZN and the Free State. And here I am now!
Question:
What skills or traits make someone a highly successful portfolio manager?

Valecia:
Being efficient, friendly, understanding and willing to listen and think differently to assist clients and brokers. Knowing that our clients and brokers are extremely busy individuals, I strive to ensure that dealing with us is a seamless and easy process that they look forward to. Having a good sense of humour also helps a lot.
Question:
Tell me the parts of your day that make you think “Yes! This is why I love my job”.

Valecia:
Being able to assist clients and brokers and knowing that they are benefiting from access to Premium Financing. Having the opportunity to deal with amazing, hard-working people makes my day even better.
Question:
Imagine you’re talking to someone who has very little knowledge of insurance in general (never mind financing premiums!). How would you explain what you do to help businesses with Insurance Premium Financing solutions?

Valecia:
Premium Financing can be seen as ‘too good to be true’ because of the long list of benefits for both corporate clients and brokers. The process is ridiculously quick and easy.

Financials are only required if the total premium exceeds a million rand and credit approval is done within 24 hours of receiving the required documents.

Once client information, debit notes and credit approval (when necessary) is received, the client will receive a quote or finance agreement within 24 hours and once the signed Agreement is received from the client, they can be safe in the knowledge that their policies are covered with little hassle or wait.

Further benefits include being able to finance their annual policy on a monthly basis, often saving on premiums as annual policies are often discounted, and there is less chance of premiums increasing through the year due to claims for example.

There is also no effect on the client’s current banking facilities when premium financing. The client is able to claim their annual VAT upfront, and they also save as only one monthly debit order is collected for multiple lines of cover.

Most importantly, they can have full faith in Fulcrum who are independent financiers that have decades of experience in premium financing and have successfully dealt with the majority of the insurers and underwriters throughout the years.
Question:
You’ve been at Fulcrum for over 7 years. That’s pretty impressive (and rare) to find in 2022. What aspects of your work or the company culture keep you happy and give you a sense of purpose?

Valecia:
Very few people can say that they truly love working with their internal team as well as their clients. But I can say with radical honesty that they make my job meaningful and worthwhile. I work with a team that consists of (probably) the most knowledgeable professionals in South Africa with regards to Premium Financing. And they’re always willing to share their ideas internally and make sure all of our clients know that they are important to us as a whole. It’s incredibly inspiring and I am truly proud to be part of the premium financing team as well as the Fulcrum Group.
