Question:
What was your dream job when you were young?

Taryn:
I wanted to pursue teaching when I was younger and although I didn’t pursue this career I believe I offer these qualities by raising my 3 children day-by-day.

Question:
How did you end up as a portfolio manager at The Fulcrum Group

Taryn:
I moved from the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg 20 years ago and applied for a temporary position in the short-term insurance industry with a large multinational company. After being in a credit control work environment for a few months I was promoted into the Premium Financing division as an Accounts administrator. Fast forward to 2010 – people say things happen in three’s, I had given birth to my 2nd daughter, a month later our family moved home and whilst on maternity leave I was invited for an interview with Fulcrum. I was not looking for a job at the time but saw no harm in going for the interview. In successfully securing a position at Fulcrum, I started as Premium Financing Account Executive for the Gauteng region in March 2011 and I have been happily employed to date.
Question:
What skills or traits make someone a highly successful portfolio manager?

Taryn:
Most certainly, strong people skills, working well under pressure and an organised work approach. Being a portfolio manager is all about building solid relationships with your clients, being an active team participant, and being deadline driven. Going the extra mile for your clients and ensuring they’re receiving the service the Insurance industry demands. After all, if it wasn’t for our clients we wouldn’t have the successful business we have today.
Question:
Tell me the parts of your day that make you think “Yes! This is why I love my job.”

Taryn:
Dealing with great people (both clients and brokers) on a daily basis with whom I’ve built good working relationships with. Receiving positive outcomes of securing new business but more importantly maintaining current clients, the expressions of brokers breaking the good news by phone or e-mail and knowing each new day will come with new challenges to tackle no matter the outcomes.
Question:
For the unaware, how do you go about helping businesses with Insurance Premium Financing solutions?

Taryn:
We finance clients short-term insurance premiums over a finance period which best suits their requirements. The benefits for our client is that they have access to attractive funding on short notice, an additional source of finance which does not affect their current banking facilities, and their VAT is reclaimable upfront. No additional security is required and they earn more on their retained capital than through re-scheduling their annual insurance premiums. This product also allows clients to free up capital for any initiatives they may require or pursue.
Question:
You’ve worked at the same company for over 11 years. That’s almost unheard of in our current job-hopping world! What makes you stay with The Fulcrum Group?

Taryn:
I’m happy in my job and I deal with so many different clients and industries. (both existing and new) One would think that after 11 years I would get bored but I find excitement and new challenges on a daily basis. I am self-disciplined, I enjoy the close-knit team we have, and I really love how we put all the pieces together when we’re working collaboratively. Fulcrum has always looked after its employees and at the end of each day I have a wonderful sense of job satisfaction.
